Kiffin spurns reporters when asked about injury

LOS ANGELES -- USC coach Lane Kiffin abruptly ended his post-practice news conference on Wednesday when he was asked about a player participating in practice who had been injured.

In a session lasting less than 30 seconds, Kiffin issued a brief yet positive opening statement about the No. 13 Trojans' second day of practice in preparation for Cal and then settled in to answer questions from reporters.

The first question related to his statement, in which Kiffin called the offense "really crisp in both the running game and the passing game." A reporter asked Kiffin if that was a "function" of a formerly injured player being back in practice on Wednesday.

"I don't know," Kiffin said, appearing displeased.

When another reporter began to ask a question on another topic, Kiffin interrupted him after several words, stepped off the padded box he was standing on and jogged away from the media scrum.

"I gotta go," he said.

He did not speak to the media any further.

In late August, USC announced a new policy requesting that media who attend practice "not report on strategy or injuries that are observed during the course of watching that practice or result from that practice."

Sports information director Tim Tessalone asked that "the media not disclose information that is observed or learned that could put USC at a competitive disadvantage to opponents."

Last week, a reporter was banned from practice for two weeks for reporting on an injury that occurred away from practice before being reinstated after two days.

NCAA policy chief: Drop "student-athlete" term

Written By Sepatu on Selasa, 18 September 2012 | 17.32

While presenting a unified front publicly and in the courts that athletes are being fairly treated, NCAA leaders privately agonized over the growing use of athlete images in commercial products, with one senior executive proposing to drop the term "student athlete" after a half century of official use.

The philosophical divide emerges in depositions and frank emails unsealed this week in a class-action lawsuit by former UCLA basketball star Ed O'Bannon and other players who challenge the NCAA's licensing of their images to video games manufacturers and other third parties.

In one internal email sent after the lawsuit was filed in 2009, University of Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman wrote to then-Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe that he disagrees with the NCAA's legal defense that it can sell publicity rights without any compensation to the players.

"This whole area of name and likeness and the NCAA is a disaster leading to catastrophe as far as I can tell," wrote Perlman, a former member of the NCAA Board of Directors and law professor specializing in intellectual property. "I'm still trying to figure out by what authority the NCAA licenses these rights to the game makers and others. I looked at what our student athletes sign by way of waiver and it doesn't come close."

Objecting strongly to Perlman was Chris Plonsky, a longtime University of Texas administrator who oversees women's sports for the Longhorns. She wrote that athletes "voluntarily" sign the standard release waiver that is required for participation in NCAA sports.

"

Maybe we don't call them student-athletes any longer and just refer to them as students.

" -- NCAA senior policy advisor Wallace Renfro

"We're like a version of the Army," Plonsky wrote. "We have certain things we have to do a certain way to raise funds and pay for the scholarships and other things s-a's (student athletes) and their parents expect."

In a separate exchange, Wallace Renfro, NCAA senior policy advisor, wrote a memo to new president Mark Emmert after Emmert was hired to run the organization in 2010. Lawyers for the plaintiffs cited the memo, an analysis of issues confronting the NCAA titled "Looking Forward," in deposition of Renfro on June 26.

"Maybe we don't call them student-athletes any longer and just refer to them as students," Renfro wrote.

In the email to Emmert, Renfro, who has worked at the NCAA since the 1970s, notes that the term student-athlete is one "that Walter Byers created to counter the criticism that we are paying college athletes when we began providing grants-in-aid." Byers was the first executive director of the NCAA, retiring in 1988 after 37 years, and a grant-in-aid is the term of art used by the NCAA to describe an athletic scholarship.

The lawsuit claims the NCAA violates anti-trust laws by preventing universities from allowing athletes to be compensated above the value of a grant-in aid room, board, books and fees. The discovery submitted to the court represents a small fraction of the documents collected in what has become a landmark test of the NCAA's governance and notions about college athletes.

"I'd rather not comment on the evidence itself," said Michael Hausfeld, lead attorney for the plaintiffs, when contacted Tuesday by ESPN. "But I will say the documents expose how the principle of amateurism was not a bedrock against the NCAA's commercialization of college sports."

An NCAA spokesman did not respond to an ESPN request for comment on the legal disclosures, and how they might affect the viability of the NCAA defending itself in the case. The O'Bannon case is scheduled to go to trial in early 2014, pending a judge's ruling on class certification.

A stalwart of the NCAA's economic model that redistributes money from revenue sports to other parts of the athletic department and university, Renfro proposed a re-focusing of sports on the educational mission of universities. At the same time, he conceded that the philosophy underpinning the model has become antiquated -- and even posed whether the time has come to allow athletes to hire agents.

"We have always had a cradle-to-grave approach to amateurism," Renfro wrote. "You are born an amateur, but like innocence once lost, it cannot be regained. But our commitment to amateurism and the commitment of our public's has often been based on something other than how we define amateurism in our own constitution. In the most romantic sense we think of amateurism as playing sports for the love of the game, for the camaraderie among competitors, for the pride of victory for school or colors, and then we use this romanticized sense of amateurism to define the entire enterprise of collegiate athletics."

Renfro said that Emmert never responded to his memo. When pressed by lawyers in the deposition, he characterized his ideas in the memo as discussion points, not endorsements.

In one note, Plonsky disparaged football and men's basketball players for bringing the lawsuit. Plaintiffs include former Arizona State quarterback Sam Keller, and basketball stars Oscar Robertson, Bill Russell and Tate George, whose lawyers have proposed to the court that athletes receive a cut of licensing and broadcast contracts with monies going into a fund that can be accessed after their college careers.

"

This whole area of name and likeness and the NCAA is a disaster leading to catastrophe as far as I can tell.

" -- Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman

"I view these cases as being the result of the entitlement attitude we've created in our revenue sports," Plonsky wrote. "We now have threatening s-a's -- many of whom, based on grad rates of the 80s and 90s, sucked a whole lot off the college athletics pipe -- and now want to buckle the system at the knees of the expense of today's s-a's."

Perlman, after reading her note, pushed back. "I am very much opposed to her suggestion," he wrote, "I have yet to have anyone define for me the 'values of higher education' in a way that is consistent with commercial exploitation of a student athletes name or likeness. & As soon as it becomes commercialtied to selling a product -- I don't think we should be doing it."

The NCAA and Electronic Arts, which produces a video game on college football, argues that the avatars depicted in the game are not based on the likenesses of actual players. The plaintiffs counter that the characteristics of individual players are so similar to those shown in the video game that there must be a direct connection.

Correspondence released Monday appears to support that athletes' contention. In one email exchange from July 2007, an executive with the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), which represents the NCAA and its member schools, noted that EA Sports was using real player names to develop the latest game internally, with plans to strip them out before release to the public.

"Just a heads up, in case schools ask you this all of EA's latest 2008 March Madness basketball submissions have current players names on the jerseys in the game," wrote Wendy Harmon, a CLC marketing coordinator. "I have called Gina Ferranti at EA about this (she submits all of these basketball ones) and she assured me that they will not be using those in the final version. She said they have to put the players names in so it will calculate the correct stats but then they take them off. Just don't want the schools to freak out she said a few have already commented on it in their approval."

An hour later, CLC senior vice president and managing director Derek Eiler forwarded the email, notifying other top executives. He wrote, "Just an FYI on this in case word reaches the NCAA. This is exactly the type of thing that could submarine the game if it got into the media."

CLC is the nation's leading trademark licensing and marketing company, representing more than 200 universities and colleges, bowl games and athletic conferences, as well as the NCAA. In that capacity, according to the CLC website, the company helps institutions protect, manage and develop their brands.

Despite that relationship with the NCAA and its members schools, the CLC explored the possibility of representing players after the Keller-O'Bannon lawsuits were filed, according to documents. At a company retreat in September 2009, senior leadership introduced the idea of organizing former players into an entity called the "College Vault Players Association," whose purpose, according to an email by one CLC executive, would be to "do whatever is necessary to assure that the licensing and marketing rights of former collegiate student athletes are protected and revenue opportunities are pursued."

The CLC's proposed 16 founding members of the CVPA would include Michael Jordan, Brian Bosworth, Dick Butkus, Joe Montana, John Elway, Deion Sanders and the Manning brothers. It is unclear from the document whether those players had been contacted or were on board with the plan to negotiate with their schools. The CVPA would pursue deals with companies in a range of sectors, including trading cards, games, videos, jerseys, books, photographs and collectibles.

One of CLC's top executives was intrigued enough with the idea that he wondered if the group should expand beyond former players. On December 30, 2009, senior vice president Cory Z. Moss asked, "Should we really begin work on a formal College Student Athlete Players Association (current and former) to be ready depending on the results of the EA lawsuits?"

While CLC was moving fast to capitalize on new revenue opportunities related to athlete images, so was the NCAA under former president Myles Brand -- until the lawsuit was filed. In 2007, a CLC executive reported that the NCAA, with the aid of former senior executive Greg Shaheen, had begun to embrace the potential of its relationship with the EA Sports games.

"The NCAA now (finally) sees EA as an important tool to allow them to reach young people with the values associated with intercollegiate athletics," wrote Pat Battle, a CLC manager. "As a result of all this, Greg has gotten me in front of & Myles, and they are now viewing what they do on our behalf as mission critical. It has been pretty cool to watch.

"The primary purpose of this meeting was to lobby for the rights to use rosters in video games, including the names of players on jerseys within the game. While it will still take some time (probably 12-18 months) to go through the NCAA legislative process, Greg is now confident that we will get this done. That will be a huge win for us and EA."

The NCAA did not move forward with the proposal through its legislative process. However, gamers later did gain the ability to use a backdoor to attaching names to the avatars, through software available on the internet that was compatible with the EA Sports game.

In his interview with ESPN, Hausfeld characterized the documents released by his legal team as insightful into the NCAA's business model, as a trade organization for member colleges.

"For the first time, we are getting behind the veil of the so-called principle of amateurism," he said. "The principle is being tested by what was known by the NCAA and what they did to address its challenges."

Barkley agrees with Kiffin about critique of play

Updated: September 18, 2012, 5:15 PM ET

By Pedro Moura | ESPNLosAngeles.com

LOS ANGELES -- USC quarterback Matt Barkley said Tuesday he is glad his head coach publicly critiqued his play from Saturday's surprising loss to Stanford.

Trojans coach Lane Kiffin said over the weekend that Barkley made some "really poor decisions" in USC's 21-14 loss to the Cardinal at Stanford Stadium.

"Yeah, I made some poor decisions," Barkley said after the Trojans practiced on Tuesday. "But that's why you watch the film and learn from it."

After reviewing the film from the game, Kiffin said in a Sunday evening conference call with reporters that Barkley made "probably two of his worst decisions in our three years together."

Asked about that comment on Tuesday, Barkley said he appreciated the honesty.

"He's going to be real, you know?" Barkley said. "He is going to defend me when he has to and he's going to be real when he has to. I'm glad he's not hiding me behind a curtain or anything like that.

"I know what I did. It's not like he's making fun of me or something to the public."

Barkley said the Stanford loss took him by surprise.

"I wasn't expecting that," he said. "I didn't think that was going to happen this year."

But, he said, he deserves much of the blame for the loss.

"It's my team and my offense, so I know we are responsible for doing more than that and we're capable of more than that," Barkley said.

No. 13 USC, which dropped from No. 2 with the loss, hosts Cal on Saturday at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.

Barkley said he had moved on to the game "24 hours" after the Stanford loss -- but he was still using it as motivation as he prepared for the Bears.

"You learn a lot through a defeat like that," he said. "I'd say you learn how to come back the next day and respond to your team and be the voice that they need.

"It's what football is all about. You enjoy the victories and you learn from your mistakes and tough games like that."

Kiffin says Barkley made 'really poor decisions'

Written By Sepatu on Senin, 17 September 2012 | 12.21

Updated: September 17, 2012, 12:11 PM ET

By Pedro Moura | ESPNLosAngeles.com

LOS ANGELES -- USC Trojans coach Lane Kiffin was puzzled by two "really poor decisions" made by Trojans quarterback Matt Barkley in the second quarter of USC's 21-14 road loss to Stanford on Saturday.

And Kiffin went as far to call them some of the worst decisions he's ever seen Barkley make.

On a third down with less than two minutes to play in the first half of Saturday's game, Barkley threw into traffic and was intercepted by the Cardinal's Jordan Richards.

Then, after USC linebacker Dion Bailey picked off the ensuing throw from Stanford's Josh Nunes, Barkley forced a throw downfield and had his second straight pass intercepted.

"(That was) really unusual by Matt," Kiffin said in his Sunday evening conference call with reporters. "Probably two of his worst decisions in our three years together on back-to-back plays."

At the time, USC led 14-7. The Trojans didn't score again the rest of the game.

Kiffin noted that Barkley had thrown just one interception in nine quarters of football until that point. He also said Barkley took a lot of shots from Stanford defenders throughout the game and indicated he was the victim of poor offensive line play.

"He's pretty beat up, mentally and physically," Kiffin said of Barkley, who appeared on the verge of tears in a brief postgame press conference following the loss.

A senior, four-year starter and preseason Heisman favorite, Barkley will now end his college career without beating Stanford -- unless the teams match up again in the Pac-12 championship game in November and USC wins.

Kiffin said his quarterback was broken up over that fact.

"You can imagine the disappointment of a 22-year-old, when you come back and all that you put into it and the game goes the way that it did and having never beat those guys," Kiffin said. "(But) he'll be fine. He'll rally, just like he has before.

"And he'll play great this Saturday."

Barkley finished the loss to Stanford with 254 yards on 20-of-41 passing, with those two interceptions and no touchdowns. It was the first time since October 2010 Barkley played a whole game and failed to throw for a touchdown.

No. 13 USC, which dropped from No. 2 following the loss, hosts Cal on Saturday at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.

Alabama, LSU back as No. 1-No. 2 in Top 25

Written By Sepatu on Minggu, 16 September 2012 | 09.32

Updated: September 16, 2012, 12:21 PM ET

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Alabama and LSU are back atop The Associated Press college football poll, holding down Nos. 1 and 2 the way they did most of last season.

The Crimson Tide is No. 1 for the third straight week, and it was almost unanimous. Alabama received 58 of 60 first-place votes. LSU got the other two.

The Southeastern Conference rivals were ranked first and second for eight weeks during last season before eventually meeting in the BCS title game. The difference last year was LSU was first and Alabama second -- until the Tide won the national championship game.

LSU moved up to No. 2 this week after Southern California's first loss of the season. USC slipped 11 spots to 13th after losing 21-14 at Stanford.

Stanford jumped from 21st to ninth.

Barkley, No. 2 Trojans upset by Cardinal again

STANFORD, Calif. -- David Shaw tried to hold back his emotions on the sideline. The second-year Stanford coach watched his players bounce on both sides of him, then fans swarm the field from all angles, and he finally couldn't resist flashing a giant I-told-you-so smile anymore.

No Jim Harbaugh and no Andrew Luck, but the Cardinal still have every answer for Matt Barkley and Southern California.

Josh Nunes threw a go-ahead 37-yard touchdown to Zach Ertz, Stepfan Taylor ran for 153 yards and scored two touchdowns, and No. 21 Stanford upset second-ranked USC 21-14 on Saturday night for its fourth straight win in this series.

"We don't want to be that team known for one victory," Shaw said. "We want to be known for victory after victory, stacking wins on top of wins."

Make it four of a kind against that longtime powerhouse from down south.

Heisman Trophy hopeful Barkley threw for 254 yards and two interceptions while completing only 20 of 41 passes. He was sacked twice on the final drive for the Trojans (2-1, 0-1 Pac-12) and threw out of bounds on a final, desperate heave on fourth-and-39 from USC's 25-yard line.

Coming out of a two-year bowl ban, USC had national title hopes this season. Now the Trojans, who were held scoreless for the final 41:19, will have to climb out of another hole to get there.

"You learn and go back to playing Trojan football," said a disappointed Barkley, who has beaten every conference teams but is 0-4 against Stanford. "We got to just not put the blame on anybody, learn from our mistakes and make sure we bounce back."

Once the clock hit zeros, a sold-out crowd of 50,360 at Stanford Stadium rushed the field, tossing streamers and jumping in a wild celebration at midfield with Shaw and Stanford players caught in the middle of the mess. Stanford (3-0, 1-0) is 3-0 for the third straight season for the first time since 1970-72 and has its longest winning streak ever against USC in a rivalry that dates back to 1905.

Stanford cornerback Wayne Lyons celebrates after the Cardinal upset No. 2 USC 21-14 on Saturday night.

"I love the energy and I love the enthusiasm," Shaw said. "But we are not surprised."

He might be the only one.

Luck, the No. 1 overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts, two-time Heisman runner-up and perhaps the greatest player in school history, is gone and so much about this season seemed uncertain. Now the only chance another senior quarterback and possible No. 1 overall pick has for revenge against the Cardinal now is a rematch in the Pac-12 title game.

"It's not the end of the world," said USC coach Lane Kiffin said, now 0-3 against Stanford. "We'll get back on the plane, go home and we'll get better."

Stanford's Jordan Williamson missed field goals of 47 and 23 yards and had a 51-yarder blocked by T.J. McDonald. With a defense that flustered Barkley and a new quarterback that found his footing late, the kicker who missed three field goals in the Fiesta Bowl loss to Oklahoma state last season could smile in the pile with everybody else.

Except for the Trojans, that is.

A year after Luck led Stanford back in a 56-48 triple-overtime thriller at the Coliseum, a new crop of Cardinal players delivered another moment to savor.

Taylor took a short screen pass and scurried 23 yards for a tying touchdown late in the third quarter. Nunes scampered 12 yards on a third-and-10 from midfield in the fourth and then delivered the strike to Ertz, who juked a defender and dove into the end zone to give Stanford a 21-14 lead and send the home fans into a flurry with 10:20 to play.

"That was a great route," Nunes said. "We knew we had been trying to set up that route for a while, and Zach just ran a great route with great protection."

The last chance for USC never amounted to much.

Marqise Lee caught an 18-yard pass on fourth-and-4 on the sideline that was originally ruled out of bounds. After a video replay, officials ruled Lee's left foot landed in bounds and he controlled the ball.

Mistakes finally doomed the Trojans.

USC had a 10-yard holding penalty, then Trent Murphy sacked Barkley, followed by a 5-yard false start penalty on the Trojans and a sack by Chase Thomas before Barkley's final heave out of bounds.

Nunes threw for 215 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions on 15-for-32 passing in the redshirt junior's biggest game yet. In the end, all that really mattered to Luck's replacement was the win.

USC center Khaled Holmes, who left last week's victory over Syracuse on a cart with a right leg injury, struggled in his limited time on the field along with the rest of the offensive line to protect Barkley from Stanford's relentless rush.

Stanford sacked Barkley four times and had him constantly losing his poise in the pocket. The Cardinal outgained the Trojans 417 to 280 in total yards and held USC to only 26 yards rushing.

"Against the best quarterback in the nation, these guys played great," Shaw said of his players.

The Trojans seemed poised to run away from Stanford at the start.

But each time the Trojans scored, Taylor -- often in Luck's shadow the past three years -- refused to let his team go without a fight and perhaps launched his own Heisman campaign in the process.

Taylor ran 59 yards, making four defenders on a nine-man defensive front miss and running for touchdown that tied the score 14-all midway through the third quarter. He finished with five catches for 60 yards.

A pass interference penalty by Terrence Brown against Lee extended USC's drive in the second quarter. Then Robert Woods caught a 24-yard pass from Barkley, sliced back right and dived just short of the pylon to set up Penn State transfer Silas Redd's second short TD run to give the Trojans a 14-7 lead.

A wild, wacky sequence in the final 8 minutes of the first half featured five turnovers and, perhaps amazingly, no points by either side.

At one point, Barkley threw two interceptions -- one to Jordan Richards and another to Brown -- sandwiched between an interception thrown by Nunes that landed in the hands of Dion Bailey on three consecutive plays. Jawan Starling picked off another pass by Nunes in the final second of the half.

But just like the rest of a miserable night on The Farm, the Trojans couldn't convert when it counted.

Tips Galau tapi Bahagia

Tips Galau tapi Bahagia Putus cinta bukan akhir segalanya.

Manfaat Olahraga Sore Hari

Written By Sepatu on Rabu, 07 Maret 2012 | 05.12

Tips Wisata Diving Bawah Laut

Written By Sepatu on Selasa, 06 Maret 2012 | 05.31

Apalagi jika Anda baru memiliki kemampuan dasar.

Ingatlah, jangan terlalu lama menyelam. Serta hindari merencanakan wisata menyelam Anda sehari sebelum Anda berencana kembali pulang, terutama jika Anda berencana pulang dengan naik pesawat terbang.
